Welcome: how this course works
Welcome, how the course works, and a short pre-test to see what you already know about the Oil Record Book. The pre-test is not graded.
Welcome to Mastering the Oil Record Book
The Oil Record Book (ORB) is a legal document. Every entry you sign is a statement that inspectors, courts and your company will rely on. This course shows you how to write entries that are correct, complete and true, based on MARPOL Annex I and the IMO's guidance MEPC.1/Circ.736/Rev.2, with the latest changes up to October 2026.
How the course works
Pre-test (10 questions, not graded).
Five short video lessons, each with notes and a quick check. Score 100% on the check to open the next lesson. You can retry as often as you need.
ORB Desk: six interactive tasks where you build and check real entries. Score 80% or more to open the final assessment.
Final assessment: pass with 80% and every critical question right.
Certificate of completion.
Good to know
Each video has an English-caption and a Hindi-caption version. Watch whichever you prefer.
Keep the Code quick reference and the Worked examples book open while you practise.
Chief engineers, second engineers and masters should also read the Officer and master guide.
All worked entries use a fictional ship. Copy tank names from your own IOPP Supplement.
Time needed: about 2 hours (about 3 hours with the officer path).
Safety note: follow your company SMS and flag State instructions; where they are stricter, the stricter rule applies. The certificate confirms completion of an online awareness course. It is not a certificate of competency.
